Scissors, paste, sign language: Study to show deaf children’s enculturation
Many deaf children are unique in that they establish their deaf cultural identity at school rather than at home, as tends to be the case with hearing children. To investigate the link between teaching methodology and the student’s enculturation process, Arizona State University researchers are observing and videotaping deaf signing kindergartens in France, Japan, and the United States. The edited video results are then used as a springboard for discussion among various participants in deaf education: educators, parents, and of course, the children themselves. This study aims to provide new insights into the changing dynamics of modern deaf education, especially given the rise of early cochlear implantation.
