Rights of Deaf & HoH Individuals in Prison
News has been released about the understanding of rights of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in prison and jail. For example, the intercom rules over meals, and activities but those who are deaf cannot hear this so they experience higher rates of isolation and issues communicating. This means there is exclusion from those inmates who can hear. In this article, there is a mention of the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Minnesota Human Rights Act. But Minnesota jails and prisons have not met the needs of disabled inmates like Choua Yang. Fortunately, people like Yang have goals to improve the prison system by ensuring there are interpreters available, and are consistent enough so that deaf inmates do not have to consistently advocate.
