Hannah faced a ‘deaf future’, until an auditory brain stem implant changed her life
Hannah McPierzie was born with neurofibromatosis type 2, which affects balance, nerves – and in Hannah’s case, caused hearing loss. She noticed it regularly as it progressively got worse over time. She underwent Chemotherapy and treatment to suppress the tumors that were growing on her nerves, but it wouldn’t save her hearing. Finally, she underwent a risky surgery to attempt to remove the tumor, which could leave her permanently deaf. The surgery implanted her with a new auditory brain stem, and happily, it worked! Hannah can now hear enough to do everyday activities and has made remarkable progress in her treatment.
