Could a Drug Prevent Hearing Loss from Loud Music and Aging?
Hearing loss can be caused by various factors like exposure to loud noises, aging, or taking certain medications. Once a person’s hearing is damaged, limited options are available to improve it – in this case, hearing aids or cochlear implants are the only solutions. Researchers at the University of California in San Francisco made an important discovery about certain underlying mechanisms of hearing loss in the inner ear. Their findings further the understanding of what goes on in the ear once the person’s hearing deteriorates. This could pave the way for developing preventative treatments to stop deafness before it starts. This research, which was published on December 22, 2023 in the Journal of Clinical Investigation Insight, this linked animal studies on hearing loss with rare inherited types of deafness in humans.
