A Community in Mourning — Responding to the Minneapolis School Tragedy

  On the morning of August 27, 2025, the Minneapolis community was shaken by an unspeakable act of violence at Annunciation Catholic School and Church during a morning Mass service. A heavily armed individual opened fire through stained-glass windows with a rifle, shotgun, and pistol. The attack claimed the lives of two young students—8-year-old Fletcher Merkel and 10-year-old Harper Moyski—and injured 18 others, including 15 children and 3 elderly parishioners.  The perpetrator, a former student at the school, died by suicide at the scene. Authorities are treating the incident as both a domestic terrorism attack and an anti‑Catholic hate crime, with disturbing evidence pointing to deeply hateful motives.  Local and state leaders have called for more than just “thoughts and prayers.” Mayor Jacob Frey urged concrete action against violence, while Governor Tim Walz ordered flags flown at half-staff and pledged public safety support.  Hundreds gathered for a vigil near Hennepin County Medical Center, offering solidarity and healing through collective grief and prayer. Families of the victims shared poignant messages: Fletcher’s father asked people to “give your kids an extra hug,” while Harper’s parents remembered her bright spirit and called for systemic change.  In the aftermath, conversations about gun safety reforms, assault weapons bans, expanded mental health support, and community resilience have reignited—with urgency and compassion.
