Climbers Make History: 2 Mountaineers Become First Deaf Americans to Reach Everest Summit
Two deaf mountaineers recently made history by reaching the summit of Mount Everest. The climbers, Scott Lehman and Sarah Unger, reached the summit on May 22, 2023. Lehman realized the amount of barriers and restrictions on Deaf climbers in 2012, which inspired him to make the climb. Mountaineering courses weren’t taught in ASL, and there were no guides for the Deaf to learn from. Lehman and Unger have made it their mission, especially while climbing Everest, to educate the public on both the Deaf community, as well as on climbing.
