The Louisiana School for the Deaf under review, poor performance ratings

The Louisiana School for the Deaf is under review and will likely need to undergo changes to improve its performance, according to Kathy Edmonston, a member of the state’s Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE).

State Superintendent of Education John White said that the school is struggling by the state’s definition.

A main concern is whether all staff members at the school can understand and use American Sign Language, according to State Rep. Patricia Smith, a veteran of the House Education Committee.

Edmonston helped initiate the review and said she’s attended five meetings regarding the school’s performance. She said that many in the community feel that the administration is largely to blame in the school’s shortcomings.

The issue may be discussed when BESE meets on Jan. 23-24.
