‘We are not costumes’: Why Marlee Matlin put her foot down for ‘CODA’ to cast deaf actors

The upcoming film “CODA” will star a cast comprised of deaf actors. The actors use sign language extensively to communicate in the film. The actors themselves were very against hearing actors portraying the deaf. Lead actor Marlee Matlin in particular fought against a hearing actor portraying a deaf character. Matlin hopes to soon see the point where deaf actors can carry a film or series. She will also continue advocating for progress in this field even beyond “CODA”.
