Treating hearing loss is associated with a decrease in risk of early death and dementia, studies show
One of your health resolutions for the new year may need to include getting checked for hearing aids. If you need to wear hearing aids, they can protect you from early according to a new study in The Lancet Healthy Longevity journal published on January 3rd. Dr. Janet Choi, an otolaryngologist with Keck Medicine of USC and assistant professor of clinical otolaryngology-head and neck surgery at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine stated, “What we found was that there was a 24% lower risk of mortality for people who use hearing aids.” The study identified the deaths of 10,000 individuals between 1999 and 2012, looking at data from more than 1,800 of whom had been diagnosed with hearing loss. According to the study, 237 people with hearing loss stated they used hearing aids at least once a week, while 1,483 said they never used them.
