Oscar-Worthy ‘Sound of Metal’ Is a ‘Wake-Up’ to Deaf Culture

Amazon recently released a movie on their streaming service entitled “Sound of Metal.” The movie is about a heavy-metal drummer who rapidly begins to lose his hearing. In the past, able-bodied actors often played the roles of people with disabilities. However, in “Sound of Metal,” only actors who are actually deaf (or from a deaf culture) portray deaf characters.

This film helps emphasize the fact that deafness is not just a disability – it is its own separate culture.
