Madison County rapper, educator uses music and sign language to aid deaf community

Shawn Self is a rapper and educator from Hull, Georgia. He works with Atlanta-based company Deafinitely Dope to inform others about ASL while advocating for the deaf community.

Self has a family history of deafness. He wants his son and nephew, who are also deaf, to have an easier path than what he’s faced.

Self has taught advanced ASL classes online since early last year. Using music is a theme in most of his classes, as well as interpreting different genres into sign language. He hopes that years from now, his own deaf community will be able to do even more.
