Deaf mom named MJC disabled student of the year

Nicole Sanchez will graduate on May 3rd from Modesto Junior College with an associate of science degree in culinary arts. She hopes to be a school chef. As a toddler, Sanchez lost her hearing, but she lip reads and signs with ease. Sanchez is also the 2013 Disability Services Student of the Year. MJC helps approximately 1,000 students with different needs, and around 20 of them are deaf or hard of hearing. To be selected for student of the year, one must have a great attitude, achieve academic success, and overcome challenges. Sanchez met all three qualifications. As well as her associate degree, Sanchez earned certificates in food safety, culinary arts, and cake decorating.
