Deaf man makes dream of becoming firefighter a reality in West Haven
Joseph Ronan, a deaf man from Connecticut, will soon begin volunteering as a firefighter, fulfilling a life-long dream. With the assistance of interpreters, Ronan began taking classes at a local fire school early this year. During training situations where concrete buildings were set on fire, Ronan’s classmates used signals to help direct him, and Ronan would like to teach other firefighters at the station sign language. While he cannot become a certified (paid) firefighter, Ronan can continue to volunteer, and was the first deaf student at the fire school.
