Women’s AFL team surprises deaf teammate with Auslan rendition of club song
A deaf football player in Brisbane, Australia recently received a touching surprise—an Australian Sign Language performance of her football club’s team song.
Deaf athlete Jamie Howell is a member of the Yeronga South Brisbane Devils Football Club. Unbeknownst to Jamie, club members spent more than a month learning their club song in Australian Sign Language, or Auslan. Following a game win, more than 60 players and staff broke into a coordinated, signed rendition of the song. The performance shocked but delighted Jamie. She later shared, “I was so surprised, overwhelmed, and incredibly amazed that these girls put in the effort to learn the team song in Auslan and make me feel included.”
A video of the event quickly went viral as people shared a heartwarming show of support.
