New Face Mask Opens Window To Understanding For Many
The coronavirus pandemic created distinct challenges for the deaf and hard of hearing—communication being one of them. Fortunately, the deaf community is finding some unique workarounds.
With teachers and speech professionals needing clear face masks, an audiology student in California is rising to the task. Modeling her mask from similar templates online, Gabriela Rubalcava created her own variant that shows the user’s lips.
“I’m looking to professional organizations to promote things like clear masks to improve communication,” Rubalcava said. She’s one of many who are working hard to make America a safer, yet more accessible place.
