Islanders fan Gary Noll advocates for closed captioning in sports arenas

The UBS Arena is set to open in November 2021. This baseball stadium includes state-of-the-art contactless concessions and scoreboards with on-site closed captioning. The latter feature is a novel luxury for the deaf and hard of hearing community.

Gary Noll designed the project to implement closed captioning. Noll is a scientist and member of the Islanders’ Booster Club. Born deaf to deaf parents, Noll wants the Islanders to have the most advanced closed-captioning system possible. Noll’s efforts have taken hold in many stadiums across the New York and New Jersey areas–and it’s exciting to see if these features will take off elsewhere.
