San Antonio, Texas has been selected by The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf as the location for the 2015 World Deaf Swimming Championships, which will take place August 17 – 22, 2015 at the Northside Independent School District’s Northside Swim Center.

The Championships in San Antonio will include a 50m Olympic competition swimming pool, “interactive sound and video scoreboard systems, high-tech timing and state-of-the-art start systems for Deaf swimmers, officials and coaches command centers, drug testing rooms, lighting, shaded seating for 2,400 spectators and locker room facilities accommodating up to 1,200 athletes.”

The World Deaf Swimming Championships (WDSC) is thought to be the top event for American and International Deaf Swimmers who are contending for the opportunity to attend the 2015 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games as well as other worldwide competitions endorsed by The International Committee of Sports for the Deaf.

San Antonio is slated for a notable year in the area of swimming competitions. Prior to the WDSC, the US Masters Swimming National Championships will take place April 23 – 26, the USAS Phillips 66 National Championships will take place Aug 6-10, and the Speedo Junior National Championships will take place August 10-14.

The WDSC schedule will include events dubbed “Make-A-Splash” where pool safety and swimming will be taught by USDAS Ambassadors. The events seek to “embrace both the Public and substantial Deaf communities at large in the San Antonio and adjacent areas.”
