Fremont: Deaf school's Warren Keller nominated for football coach of the year

By Joseph Geha, East Bay Times
summarized by Abby Wilson, Staff Writer

Warren Keller is the head varsity football coach and athletic director of the California School for the Deaf in Fremont. One thing that makes Keller unique when compared to other high school football coaches is that he is a member of the deaf community. Keller has been the school's football coach since 2012. In 2015, he and his team were profiled and featured in "Silent Night Lights," an ESPN E:60 documentary. His team has improved year after year and has gained much recognition.

Keller's leadership and dedication to the deaf community, among other things, have led him to be chosen as the Oakland Raiders' nominee for the Don Shula National Football League High School Coach of the Year Award – a perfect opportunity to represent the deaf community. Keller believes that the positive attention he and his team have received will positively influence the rest of the deaf community as well.
