Unique Alert System for Deaf and Blind Students

Students are no strangers to emergency drills, but deaf and blind students experience them a little differently than their hearing and seeing peers. The Virginia School for the Deaf and Blind (VSDB) recently tested out its newly-installed alert system when it took part in a nation-wide earthquake drill on October 18. The special alert system includes lights for the deaf and an audible message for the blind. According to the school’s director of public safety, VSDB drills extensively throughout the school year, especially during the first four weeks of classes, to prepare for emergencies of all kinds.
