New research on tinnitus could lead to treatment

The discovery that the cause of tinnitus, a condition that can range from a low hum in one ear to an intense ringing in both ears, is based in the brain instead of the ears has led to research regarding a treatment. Scientists at UC Berkeley have found that tinnitus may result from neurons in the auditory part of the brain firing even without input from the ears. The scientists believe that treatment could either be a retraining of the brain or even drug based, although more research needs to be done for both of these solutions.
