Super Bowl XLVI Promotes the Deaf

By National Association for the Deaf (NAD)
summarized by Edward Fu, staff writer

The National Association for the Deaf (NAD), Northern Virginia Resource for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Persons (NVRC), and PepsiCo are teaming up this year to support the deaf and hard of hearing in the Super Bowl. To do so, these organizations are launching several programs. One of these programs involve creating captions for the event in an effort to encourage deaf awareness as well as to advocate a fully captioned Super Bowl experience for all the deaf and hard of hearing individuals among its 90 million viewers. But this doesn’t mean every broadcast will be captioned. To rectify this, the NAD and NBC will post a survey asking for the captioning information you observed. Please participate, and enjoy the Super Bowl this Sunday!

Some viewers of the Super Bowl may also remember the “Bob’s House”, an ASL ad broadcasted during the 2008 Super Bowl pre-game show. According to Massimo d’Amore, a PepsiCo executive sponsor, this partnership between the NAD, NFL, and PepsiCo will be renewed to greater heights. In fact, you can witness their support this Sunday with Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, and her performance of both the National Anthem and America the Beautiful. This show will also be complemented in ASL at the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana. Can’t make it? The national broadcast will include the signed performance, so be sure to tune in.
