Free Specialized Phones for Hard of Hearing Georgians

One in every three people over the age of 60 suffers from hearing loss. As this number increases, measures must be taken to alleviate it. In Atlanta, the Georgia Council for the Hearing Impaired (GACHI) makes such an initiative. With assistance from the Georgia Public Service Commission and Georgia Telecommunications Equipment Distribution Program, these deaf or hard of hearing elderlies are provided a free cordless phone that can amplify sound by more than 50 decibels. Not only does this action assist the hearing impaired, the program’s publicizing to radios and news networks are effectively raising deaf awareness. As Johnson, executive director of GACHI, states, “I think there’s not only a growing demand, there’s going to be a growing need.”
