South African Sign Language now an official subject in South African schools

By Bongekile Macupel, Mail & Guardian
summarized by Juli Holbert, Staff Writer

Kyle Springate, a former Westville Boys’ High School student from South Africa, helped pave the way for current students to enroll in South African Sign Language in school.

Deaf individuals will, for the first time ever, be able to use SASL in matriculation to graduate from high school and enroll in a bachelor’s program afterward this year.

Springate worked to ensure that SASL could qualify as an official school subject in 2009. Though SASL was introduced to the curriculum in 2015, this year, deaf matric students can officially write the subject.

SASL’s implementation will allow deaf pupils a better opportunity to earn a passing grade and register for a bachelor’s degree, bypassing former language barriers students have faced.
