Crowdsourcing serves up the subtitles to your life

Developers at the University of Rochester in New York have designed a smartphone app, called Scribe, for captioning live events via crowdsourcing. When used, Scribe connects to a central server of workers that transcribe the live audio stream from the user’s phone and their transcriptions are combined with corrective software to reduce errors. So far, Scribe’s accuracy rate is comparable to that of professional transcription at a far lower cost. The developers hope to have a version available for deaf and hard of hearing clients within the next few months.
