Ricketts town hall a first for Nebraska's deaf community

By Zach Pluhacek, Lincoln Journal Star
summarized by Abby Wilson, Staff Writer

A group of about 70 people, most of them deaf or hard of hearing, attended Governor Pete Ricketts's town hall meeting on Friday, December 11. They were aided by a sign-language interpreter and stenographer that projected spoken content on screens within the room. This was the first by a Nebraska governor to serve the state's deaf and hard of hearing community.

After speaking for about 20 minutes, Governor Ricketts took questions from the audience that focused on the many challenges that the deaf and hard of hearing community faces - specifically the challenges when trying to find a job and getting state services. Governor Ricketts suggested that social networking could be arranged through the Nebraska Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. The community overall is very appreciative that Governor Ricketts is bringing light to their community and to the struggles that they face daily.
