GSU to lead $10 million research project to improve reading in
deaf and hard of hearing children

The National Center for Special Education Research, a part of the Department of Education, has awarded a $10 million grant to Georgia State University. The grant will go toward the establishment of CLAD—National Research and Development Center for Literacy and Deafness—the first center to focus specifically on deaf and hard of hearing children. A professor and researcher from GSU has said that even though many deaf children have normal intelligence levels, their reading skills are often poor. CLAD will aim to study how deaf and hard of hearing children learn to read in order to develop strategies to assist in the learning process.
