Scenes From a Punk Rock and Storytelling Show, for Deaf People

By Nathan Reese, The New York Times
summarized by Erin Fausel, staff writer

Filmmaker and artist Alison O'Daniel brought two separate worlds together on April 28th at the Knockdown Center in Maspeth, Queens: punk rock and the hard of hearing. According to Nathan Reese from the New York Times, the event recreated the Deaf Club that was once a social community for San Francisco's hard of hearing scene in 1979. The Offs, Dead Kennedys and Pink Section were just a few of the bands that used to put on shows for the club back in the late 70s. It was a perfectly unexpected harmony as punk music is loud and created great vibrations from the amplifiers for all to enjoy the show.

Fast forward to 2016, O'Daniel's event was also a live version of a scene from her own film, "The Tube Thieves." The picture narrates a series of tuba thefts in Los Angeles schools, according to Reese. At the Knockdown Center, three bands played and four performers put on acts in between the music shows. Among them were ASL storytellers who shared their own experiences. One individual, Opal Gordon incorporated dance into her performance. The event celebrated music and live art for all walks of life, which made it a huge success.
