Noise Pollution: Learn how to protect your ears!

By Joelle Chasse, staff writer

According to the Hearing Loss Association of America, approximately 20% of adults in the United States “report some degree of hearing loss.” (That’s about 48 million people!) Hearing loss is the third most common physical condition, after arthritis and heart disease.

Most hearing loss is caused by aging and/or loud, damaging noises. 60% of people with hearing loss are “either in the work force or in educational settings,” according to HLAA, and these individuals tend to experience a loss in wages as their hearing loss increases. HLAA’s website provides tips for people living with hearing loss, as well as other useful information.

There are several steps people can take to protect their hearing (such as: avoiding drugs that are harmful to the ears, limiting exposure to loud noises and wearing ear protection when avoidance is impossible, and creating a quiet sleep environment). There are also warning signs to be aware of when the surrounding environment is dangerously loud, including: needing to shout in order to be heard, a buzzing or ringing noise in the ears, ear pain, or temporary hearing impairment.

This helpful infographic, provided to us by ZocDoc.com, further explains noise pollution, hearing loss, and how it can be prevented.
