Monica Grace Gueye

Monica Gueye Monica Grace Gueye, hard of hearing, was born in Indianapolis to hearing parents and raised oral in a mainstream school. As a Native American registered with the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians, Monica comes from a rich, multicultural background. She has been married to her Senegalese husband for over ten years, and together they have two boys—one hearing, one Deaf. She also cares for her three older step-children.

From a young age, Monica participated in music and played the viola. She spent her high school years studying health and physiology and was highly involved in the athletics department as a student-athletic trainer. She also volunteered with the Indiana Pacers as a “ball kid,” and enjoyed working with children as a basketball camp counselor. After graduating high school, Monica signed up for ASL classes at the Indiana School for the Deaf through a program at Vincennes University. During this time, she worked at public schools and enjoyed teaching children ASL as well. As a result, Monica has a wide range of experience with children of all backgrounds and abilities. Her experiences with Deaf culture have prompted her to pursue a career in teaching deaf and hard of hearing children.
