Local law enforcement to receive training on policing the deaf community

Two professors from the University of Alabama held a workshop for 24 police officers regarding the proper practices for interacting with deaf civilians. The workshop covered topics including the Americans with Disabilities Act, American Sign Language, and Deaf culture.

Darrin J. Griffin, one of the professors facilitating the workshop, said, "You have to know who deaf people are and that they have a community before you can understand how to police them... They need interpreters and access to technologies to communicate with their families, and so a lot of times police are unaware and it becomes a legal issue."

The workshop was originally only offered for the Tuscaloosa Police Department, but was then expanded to include all local law enforcement following the shooting of a deaf motorist, Daniel Harris, by a state trooper in North Carolina several weeks ago.
