Committee narrows options on services to deaf and blind students

A committee studying the effectiveness and efficiency of Iowa’s education services for deaf and blind students no longer favors consolidating services for these two populations. The news comes following a recent public hearing, where supporters of the deaf school and the former braille school, which was closed following a study several years ago, made impassioned pleas to save programs. Several said they do not want to see services for these two populations consolidated because they have unique needs. The study underway is said to be the first to look at services for deaf and blind student populations together. While merging services is no longer on the table, several money-saving options remain. The committee plans to make formal recommendations in December.
