‘Deaf Poets Society’: Solo performance casts light into shadowy realm

A theater class prompted former psychologist Nancy Marguiles to write and act out a one-man performance based on her work with deaf patients in the 1970s and 1980s, titled “Deaf Poets Society.” Through a half-dozen characters, Marguiles showcases the lives of her clients, who came from poor backgrounds and lacked the secondary knowledge that most people gain through language absorption. However, like her clients, these characters prove to be quite adept in their own way, from a street-savvy prostitute to an independent deaf-blind man. Now that “Deaf Poets Society” has hit the stage, Marguiles is once again pursuing her love of theatre, with two more plays in tow.
