Deaf Basketball Player Scores Despite Disability

Kenny Elder is a junior at McLane High School. He plays varsity basketball and is deaf; however, he refuses to let his deafness affect him in school or on the court. Elder, speaking through his interpreter, admits that practice and working with referees can sometimes be difficult. While Elder is the first deaf athlete that McLane’s varsity coach, Germaine Tanner, has ever worked with, Tanner calls working with Elder “a privilege.” In order to keep Elder informed, his interpreter sits at the end of the bench and is involved in team huddles. Playing basketball makes Elder happy, especially when a lot of fans fill the stands. Described as “motivated” by a classmate, Elder has dreams of attending Fresno State to play basketball.
