Bill calls for program to allow deaf to serve in Air Force

By Brian Everstine, AirForce Times
summarized by Hailey Scragg, staff writer

The Keith Nolan Air Force Demonstration Act was introduced March 26 by Mark Takano to create a program for 15 to 20 people who are deaf or hard of hearing to serve in the Air Force. Currently the Defense Department has standards that exclude such people to use any hearing aids or cochlear implants to serve. This is the second time this type of act was pushed for by Takano, the first time in 2014 when it failed. The bill is named for Keith Nolan who was in ROTC in California but couldn't continue into service because he couldn't pass the hearing test. An Air Force Captain by the name Casey Doane is speaking out in favor of the bill, having grown up in a deaf family. He states "I was able to see the determination and perseverance that is necessary to serve as a leader in the Air Force."
