Designing a City for the Deaf

Deaf staff, faculty, and students at Gallaudet University have devised a list of guidelines for making cities more “deaf-friendly.” The effort, led by director of campus design and planning Hansel Baumann, strives to facilitate communication and increase safety for deaf residents by reducing visual distractions, altering spaces, and so forth. As of now, only a handful of US cities have made significant efforts to accommodate those with hearing loss; Baumann and other Gallaudet researchers hope that their new DeafSpace Guidelines will encourage more cities to take similar strides.
