Arizona organizations celebrate Black Deaf History Month

By Audrey Weil
summarized by Jeni Ten Eyck, Staff Writer

Arizona held its Fifth Annual African American Conference on Disabilities last weekend in conjunction with the celebration of Black Deaf History Month.

Talila Lewis, the conference's keynote speaker, spoke about the barriers d/Deaf prisoners have in prison and in court. She has been lobbying for four years to work with the d/Deaf prisoners in order to receive adequate services for communication, as well as re-open some of their cases because of the communication barriers present in their original trials.

Equal accessibility to proper modes of communication is an important and essential human right for the Arizona Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, who were also present at this year's conference.

This topic is not just a problem in Arizona, but in all of America. To read the original article, click here.
