American School for the Deaf Looks to the Future With $20 Million Facility

By Julie Stagis
summarized by Elizabeth Kuhn, staff writer

Gallaudet Hall, located in West Hartford, Connecticut, was an inspiring symbol for the deaf. The hall is known as the nationís oldest school for the deaf, and the birthplace of American Sign Language. The nearly 100-year-old building had been infamous for decades, yet with safety violations, the school was in desperate need of a makeover.

After fundraising for several months, the school re-opened last Monday with $20 million renovations that included brand new technology, new computer and science labs, a gorgeous new atrium lobby, and countless unique features that benefit the deaf and hard of hearing.
