I was born with a moderate hearing loss. My parents didn't find out about it until my speech impediment prompted them to take me to an ENT specialist. I was put in special education classes for students with hearing loss, then mainstreamed in middle school. After graduating high school, I earned a 4-year degree in Arts/Graphic Design from University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Now, I work as a full-time web designer.
I created this website in 2008 as a hobby because I always felt like an outsider due to my hearing loss, and I wanted to reach out to others. As time went on, I added more features—a blog, discussion forum, chat room, Facebook group, Twitter account, etc. I plan to continue expanding the website so that it can better serve the deaf and hard of hearing community.
I graduated with a B.A. in English from the University of South Florida in May 2020. During my time as an undergrad, I proofread The Airbnb Way, provided extensive feedback as a judge for The Writer's Workout, and worked as a marketing assistant at The Doer Co.
When I'm not escaping the humidity, I'm taking pictures of my cats, working on short stories, or designing book covers in Photoshop. I look forward to learning more about the deaf and hard of hearing community and putting my creative skills to good use!
I am a graduate of UWM with a B.A. in technical writing.
I am detail-oriented and enjoy writing and editing articles and webpages. Working at DeafandHoH is helping me strengthen these skills while gaining communication and problem-solving knowledge.
As for personal goals, I hope to one day publish a novel. Though creating a novel is full of challenges, my determination (and writing and editing skills) can make this dream possible.
My connection to the deaf and hard of hearing community stems from an American Sign Language class I took in college. My teacher was completely deaf, so his perspective taught me a lot about deaf culture, and even led me to becoming an intern here at DeafandHoH.
I graduated in 2020 with a B.A. in English from Brigham Young University. I've been writing professionally for over two years and plan on becoming a full-time editor. Most of my experience is in web content writing, but I've also published a food essay at The Counter online journal and a creative non-fiction essay in Inscape Literary Magazine.
I learned American Sign Language as part of my degree and completed the second-year level. I want to keep up my ASL skills, so I take opportunities any time I can. I also believe in supporting the Deaf community and I want to create new rhetoric around the amazing accomplishments of this community throughout history. I am hoping my experience at DeafandHoH will open new opportunities for me as a writer and as an advocate.
In my free time (if I ever get any), I enjoy baking, writing fiction, and going hiking with my family.
I am working toward a B.A. in design and visual communications at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee.
My passion for visual arts started when I was little. I spend most of my free time experimenting with different media. I have four years of graphic design experience.
I am eager to create promotional materials for DeafandHoH, as doing so will improve my design and marketing skills.
I recently finished my second year of learning American Sign Language and hope to further educate myself about the deaf and hard of hearing community.
I attended Waukesha County Technical College and earned an Associate's of Graphic Design. From my in-depth educational experience at WCTC, a variety of internships, and a professional position as a production artist, I've had my hands on a lot of different types of design. I've created menus, logos, wooden frames, advertisements, social media art, bulletins and newsletters, T-shirts... There's a lot of different work I've enjoyed doing and I can't want to explore more through my time with DeafandHoH!
I am working towards an Associate's of Design for Web and Print at Pellissippi State. Before attending Pellissippi, I studied graphic design and completed multiple art and design classes at the University of Tennessee. Before that, I took three years of graphic design classes in high school. I learned how to use Adobe programs, WordPress, and some HTML coding. I loved those courses so much that I knew design was exactly what I wanted to do.
I am looking forward to learning more about the deaf and hard of hearing community and using my skills to help make a difference.
I am working toward my B.A. in Graphic Design at Upper Iowa University. Though I only have a year’s worth of graphic design experience, I am constantly pushing myself to create the best content at DeafandHoH. Already, I’ve strengthened my layout and visual arts skills and can’t wait to create my next project!
Learning American Sign Language is no simple task, but being able to communicate with family friends who are deaf is motivation enough. I’m excited to learn even more about the deaf and hard of hearing community!
I hold two degrees: one for business and one for art. I started with my degree in Graphic Design and taught myself web development. I've taught children graphic design, coding, and programming.
I hope to expand my marketing skills while volunteering at DeafandHoH.com. I also hope to challenge my web development/design abilities and push myself to become better, as we should never stop learning!
This is a topic close to my own heart, as I am hard of hearing and have had hearing issues since birth. My hearing became worse as I grew older, so I wear hearing aids now.
I love spending time with my family and my two German Shepherds. Otherwise, you can find me gardening, reading a book, drinking coffee, or doing some kind of art project!
I am working on my Associate's of Applied Business, majoring in Web Design and Development. I plan on pursuing a B.A. at Kent State University. I attended Portage Lakes Career Center in 2009 and received a web design certificate.
I'm happy to contribute my technical knowledge in CSS, HTML, PHP, and WordPress that I gained from my coursework. I am excited to offer my experience as an artist and designer to this cause as well.
The arts are a huge part of my life. I am passionate about self-expression and helping others find their creative outlet.
I attended Deaf Outreach Church services with my grandfather. He was not deaf or hard of hearing but had friends within the church. We would practice sign language together.
I graduated from Portland State University in 2016 with a B.A. in German. A language enthusiast with a background in editing, translation, and education, I knew my technical and creative passions would have a place in the field of web development and design. In 2019 I earned the Web Assistant II certificate at Portland Community College, culminating in my internship at DeafandHoH.com.
By implementing designs and features for the DeafandHoH website, I’ve expanded my technical knowledge, particularly of PHP and WordPress. Through researching and updating site content, I’ve learned a good deal about deaf culture, and I’m pleased to help develop a platform and resource for the deaf and hard of hearing community.
As an intern, I'm gaining real-life experience working within a design team and learn skills and techniques to help me become a better web designer. I'm also becoming more knowledgeable about the deaf and hard of hearing community.
When I am not studying or working on school projects, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching movies, reading, taking pictures, and watching my kids' soccer games and performances. I'm also working on a website for my sister's small business.
I am excited to help the members of the deaf and hard of hearing community connect, support, and lift one another up.
Social Media Coordinator
I'm in my senior year of college, studying business administration.
I recently discovered a passion for social media. I came across an influencer video on Instagram, and ever since, I've been interested in becoming a social media manager. I hope this experience will give me a fresh perspective to help me achieve that goal!
Social Media Coordinator
I am a junior at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. I am studying International Business, but I would like to pursue marketing as my M.B.A. and future career.
I’ve harnessed my communication skills by talking to others on the phone, in-person, and online. I’m very comfortable with social media; in my previous internship I had to observe, monitor, and keep track of the company’s online presence.
By working at DeafandHoH, I hope to strengthen my research and data-gathering skills. I do not have any experience with the deaf or hard of hearing community, so I look forward to learning as much as I can!
Marketing & Social Media Coordinator
I am attending Milwaukee Area Technical College for marketing. I have worked in the marketing and sales industry for more than 15 years, and the majority of my experience has been field-based.
I have 19 years of experience in personal selling and consulting. I have had the pleasure of working with the Wisconsin Humane Society and MADACC to help in the rescue of animals.
I am passionate about my children and learn through them daily. Helping them understand compassion and watching them grow is the most rewarding experience in life.
At 13, I had my tonsils removed. There was an issue that led to my adenoids being infected. Loud sounds caused me pain. It wasn’t until a year ago that I lost hearing in my left ear as a result of the surgery and infection. By joining the DeafandHoH family, I'll have a better understanding of the challenges and accomplishments that are being faced daily by this community, challenges that I have recently come to understand personally.
I am a senior at Marquette University studying Corporate Communication with a marketing minor.
My professional skills include three years of corporate communication and marketing experience. I volunteered for two years in my local community of Milwaukee. I have three years of athletic experience at my university, which gave me a strong leadership ability and desire to help others improve.
By volunteering with DeafandHoH, I believe I will find my calling and impact others in a positive light.
I am an upcoming senior at Marquette University, working toward a major in Public Relations and a minor in Marketing. As a previous member of the Marquette Wire and a recent editorial intern, I learned so much about writing, brand strategy, and social media analytics.
I plan on strengthening my marketing and social media skills at DeafandHoH. By volunteering at senior homes, I learned about the deaf community. Still, I know there is much more for me to discover about this subject, which makes this opportunity even more exciting!
