UPDATE: 911 now just a text message away

While the ability to text 911 is in the process of becoming standard throughout the U.S, very few counties, at the moment, offer this service. However, progress is being seen in Richmond County North Carolina where a text to 911 can be sent through the four major phone carriers: AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. A text to 911 serves the same purpose as a call, with coordinates to the location of the text provided. These steps to sending a 911 text are provided by the Richmond County Emergency Services: enter 911 in the “To” field, text should be brief and contain the location of the emergency and the help needed, press send and be ready to answer questions and follow instructions. They also advise to not use abbreviations.
